Preparations are in full swing for my upcoming trip to Trinidad and Tobago this coming Friday. Minnesota-born, Trinidad-based Caitlyn Kamminga recently contacted LSF in the hopes of finding some support for a fledgling music program she and her colleagues have set up in Port of Spain, and I am happy to do whatever I can to help!
I have thus been spending a good deal of time going through my workshop to see what useful tools I can donate (always a good excuse to upgrade my own tool kit!) and sharpening them, particularly with a view to their eventual recipients not having access to a grinding wheel ... Teacher that I am, I am also preparing handouts with pertinent facts and good practices of basic set-up.
I am excited about the opportunity to get some young repairers out of the starting blocks. One of the goals of LSF (in addition to providing quality services ourselves) is to help local people find a livelihood in instrument work. Much as I enjoy these trips, over the long term I would like make myself redundant! That way, I might be able to take vacations again one day ...
